Tips for Setting Up a Backyard Birdhouse
When considering placement of your bird house you should keep in mind
the safety and health of the nesting birds; this means protection from
predators, protection from climate and the elements, and a clean
environment free from pests and parasites. Here are some tips that you
may find helpful:
- Choose a high place to mount the bird house. This decreases chances
of predators disturbing any young birds or eggs. Types of predators are
snakes, racoons, squirrels, and even household pets.
- If mounting on a tree, consider a predator guard to keep squirrels away.
- The best place to mount a bird house to protect it from predators is
on a tall metal pole. It is difficult for squirrels or racoons to climb
the pole. PVC pipe is sometimes used as well.
- Face the opening of the bird house away from blowing wind so that rain does not blow inside.
- Place the bird house in a shaded area so it doesn't get too hot in the sun. Morning sun is okay.
- Rub some bar soap on the inside of the bird house to prevent bees and wasps from building their nests.
- Clean the bird house each spring and after nesting to keep it free of pests and parasites.
